Youth Development

Since 1904, Family Matters has offered youth and teens from diverse backgrounds and economic situations, a fun-filled, structured camping experience.  The need for this summer camping program for children in the Washington, D.C. area is clear.  The US Census Bureau tell us that more than a third, 34%, of the District’s children ages 5 to 17 years were living in families below the poverty line in 2006. Too often, the low-income neighborhoods where these children reside are plagued by crime and tension that is aggravated during the summer months.

Camp Moss Hollow gives children and youth ages 7 to 14 years the opportunity to trade the chaotic and negative influences of low-income neighborhoods for fresh air and a peaceful outdoor environment. We know from speaking with the families of our campers that for many of these young people, attending Camp Moss Hollow is their first and sometimes only camping experience.  At camp, young people have the opportunity to participate in activities that are too often overlooked in school curriculums such as art, drama and music.  Campers have the chance to engage in supervised, but unstructured play time.  They learn crucial skills and cultivate new interests.  These activities include swimming lessons, computer training, hiking, arts and crafts, canoeing, fishing, drama and dance, nature studies, organized sports, camp fires, and reading.  Every year, nearly 800 children experience this life-changing program.  Camp Moss Hollow allows local youth to make life-long friends, learn new strengths, and explore new worlds!  To learn more about The Hollow, click on the link to the left!
